Anatomical variation of the origin of the left vertebral artery from the arch of aorta

چکیده
Introduction The vertebral artery (VA) normally arises from the superoposterior aspect of the first part of the subclavian artery. It enters through the foramen transversarium of the 6th cervical vertebra, then passes upwards through the foramina in the transverse processes of all of the cervical vertebrae above, curves medially behind the lateral mass of the atlas and enters the cranium via the foramen magnum. At the lower pontine border, it joins its fellow to form the basilar artery, thus supplying the brainstem and the posterior part of cerebrum [1]. The segment of the artery from its origin at the subclavian artery to the foramen transversarium of the 6th cervical vertebra is called as the pretransverse or prevertebral segment [2]. The course and variability in the origin of left vertebral artery and its importance in cerebral disorders has been described clinically [3] and surgically [4]. Its importance in head and neck surgery, angiography and arterial dissection has also been mentioned in the literature [5].

A Case Report of Variant Origin of Left Vertebral Artery from Aortic Arch and its Embryological Explanation
Vertebral artery is the first branch of subclavian artery. It merges with the same artery of the opposite side to form basilar artery and becomes one of the important source of blood supply to the brain. Variation in the origin of left vertebral artery was found in 65 year old female during magnetic resonance angiography of the neck vessels. It originated from aortic arch and was longer as ...
متن کاملAnatomical Study of Subclavian Artery and Its Branches
Background: The branches of right and left subclavian arteries are important in conducting of blood to spinal cord, posterior cranial fossa, base of the neck, thyroid gland, wall of the thorax and abdomen. The routine use of internal thoracic artery as a conduit in coronary artery bypass grafting surgery requires appreciation of the anatomical variations of these vessels. So far, there is not a...
متن کاملAnatomical Variations of Vertebral Artery
Introduction: Vertebral arteries arise from the root of the neck as the first branches from the superior-posterior aspect of the subclavian arteries. They ascend the neck to enter the cranial cavity and supply blood to the brain. Methods: A total of 20 cadavers (in 10 years) were dissected for the study of variations in the origin of the vertebral artery. This study was conducte...
متن کاملA case of aberrant bilateral vertebral arteries orgin presenting with right VA dissection
Background: Knowledge of variations in the origin of vertebral artery (VA) is indispensable to vascular surgeons. Aberrant origin of vertebral artery on either side is an uncommon finding. There are unilateral and bilateral variability in VA origin. Case presentation: We present a case of vertebral artery dissection who was found to have bilateral VAs aberrant origin. The right VA took origin ...
متن کاملA Rare Variation of Right Subclavian Artery Origin from Posterior Surface of Aortic Arch
Purpose: Several variations of aortic arch have been reported yet. In present study another variation of aortic arch was reported. Right subclavian artery arises from posterior surface of the distal end of the aortic arch. Case Report: we present a variation of an aorticarch in which right subclavian artery arisesfrom posterior surface of the distal end of the aortic arch and passing behind eso...
متن کاملA Left Kidney Present With Arterial Variation: Case Report
Renal vasculatures variations was normally found. Awareness of these variation was useful in many clinical fields procedures. During the routine dissection of posterior abdominal wall of approximately a 67 year old male formaldehyde cadaver. The left kidney present with arterial variation. An accessory renal artery was detected arising from the lateral aspect of the abdominal aorta at level dis...
